Biography
About
Dr. Spokes
Dr. Terry Spokes is Clinical Director of The Winslow. A clinical psychologist, he has directed addiction treatment services in Europe and Asia, and provides psychological therapy to adults with a range of mental health concerns. He has a specialist interest in the psychological treatment of addiction, trauma and neuropsychological concerns.
Before completing his doctoral training in clinical psychology at the University of Oxford in 2010, he worked at the Institute of Psychiatry in London on a large-scale trial supporting people with severe mental health issues into meaningful employment. A specialist placement in a traumatic stress service shaped his focus on helping people recover from traumatic experiences, and his doctoral research examined EMDR as post-incident support for nurses who had been assaulted at work.
After qualifying, he worked across neurorehabilitation services in the UK, conducting neuropsychometric assessments and neuropsychological rehabilitation. He then moved into addiction treatment, first as clinical director of a residential addiction treatment centre in Bali and later as a director of a residential treatment centre in the UK. He has advised UK addiction services on service development and best-practice policy, and in 2022 helped launch NEOVIVA, an addiction treatment service in Switzerland, where he served as Programme Director.
Alongside his clinical work, Dr. Spokes supervises and trains psychologists and mental health professionals, speaks at conferences and on podcasts and radio, and is involved in research. In 2022 he collaborated with the World Health Organization on its ‘Changemakers in Health’ project. He is a member of the organising committee of the Asia Pacific Behavioural and Addictions Medicine (APBAM) Conference, and spoke at APBAM 2026 in Singapore.
At The Winslow, Dr. Spokes oversees clinical care and programming across the 16-week programme, including neurorehabilitation and the family programme.
“One thing I’ve learned is that there’s no single path to recovery, and no one theory or model that can fully capture each person’s experience.”
